Mt. 28:16-20

I was singing in Wigan for the starving in the world and a Muslim approached me. 'Is it true that you believe that in God there are three Persons? Three into one doesn’t go.' He was right that three into one does not go but I, and all other Christians, can believe in the Holy Trinity, although we cannot understand nor explain it, because God has given us the gift of faith.

Abraham, Moses and David believed that in God there was only one Person. In their days polytheism was rife. If God had revealed to them that there were three Persons in God, pagans would surely have thought these Jews believed in three gods.

The Apostles were Jews. They had believed from childhood that there was only one Person in God. Through their own experiences and the writings of the prophets, they had learnt to see His hand in everything. He was back there in history. He was up there in the heavens. He was in the moral law. He was the Creator and Sustainer of all things.

Then one day they met a Man named Jesus. For three years they lived with Him. He spoke with authority and conviction, and all that He said made sense. They watched how He lived and the way He related to people. He had compassion for the downtrodden, concern for the hungry and the sick, and kindness for everybody. When anyone was rude or insulting to Him, He did not fire back in anger. He lived His life on a high moral plain but showed sympathy and understanding for those who were stained and scarred by sin. He talked to them about His Father who was God and that He was the Son of God. Then one day Jesus asked them who He was. Peter spoke, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”

They saw Him die and then alive again, and knew He had conquered death and the grave. It was impossible for them to think or talk about God without thinking and talking about Jesus. They had come to know God their Father through His Son.

The day came when He was taken up out of their midst but the Holy Spirit, the Comforter, came upon them nine days later and they believed that He was the Third Person of God. He became such a force in their lives, giving them strength to spread the Good News that Jesus had taught them, enabling them to live as Jesus had lived. It was they who handed on to us this mystery that in one God there are three Persons.

I like to think that the first time God revealed this truth was to Mary in Nazareth. It was in response to her question of how she could bear a Child and yet be a virgin. The archangel Gabriel said, “The Holy Spirit [the third Person] will come upon you, and the power of the Most High [the first Person] will cover you with Its shadow. And so the Child [the second Person] will be holy and will be called the Son of God.” How fitting that Our Blessed Lady should be the first to know.

Let us thank God that we Christians and Catholics believe in this Most Holy Mystery of the Blessed Trinity, and we pray that He will give this precious gift of faith to the Muslim who spoke to me in Wigan and his fellow believers.

May Almighty God, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit bless you and remain with you forever.
