Jesus' Way Is The Only Way
Wednesday of Week 24 in Ordinary Time - Cycle II
1 Corinthians 12:31-13:13 & Luke 7:31-35
What is real love? Saint Paul gives us the criteria. Real love is patient and kind, not jealous nor snobbish. Real love does not put on airs and is never rude. It is not selfish and resentful. There is no limit to love's forbearance, to its trust, its hope, its power to endure. That's what real love is all about. Paul advises us to aim for this real love.
The Gospel reading expresses the frustration of Jesus that there are some people you can never please! “They criticised John the Baptist for fasting and they criticised Me for feasting.” The answer to their problem is to be found in His conclusion, “Yet Wisdom has been proved right by all her children.” By these words Jesus is saying time will prove Him right and others wrong.
In effect He is saying 'My way is the only way. To know the full value and impact of following Me, you must be willing to try it day in and day out, over the long haul, through thick and thin, in excitement and boredom.'
Everything that is best and worthwhile in life requires patience and time to prove itself. We realise what great wisdom there is in the way of Jesus only by living it and sharing it over a long period. People who are faithful to Christ through all the ups and downs of daily life reap a deep reassurance.
Lord Jesus, help us to realise that You are God and You are always right, and in following You we can never go wrong.
