Mother of God
Mary Mother of the Church - Ordinary Time
The title Mary, Mother of the Church, is a title, officially given to Mary during the Second Vatican Council by Pope Paul VI. Many of the saints, popes and theologians have referred to our Blessed Lady as the Mother of the Church.
This title 'Mother of the Church' is reflected in the writings of St. Augustine (354-430) and St. Leo the Great, who was pope from 440-461. St. Augustine said “Mary is the mother of the members of Christ, because with charity she cooperated in the rebirth of the faithful into the Church” while St. Leo said “the birth of the Head is also the birth of the body, thus indicating that Mary is at once Mother of Christ, the Son of God, and mother of the members of His Mystical Body, which is the Church.”
I think there is a reason why this feast is celebrated on the first day after Pentecost. Where was Our Blessed Mother Mary on that first Pentecost? She was present with all the early members of Christ's Church. The Holy Spirit descended on Our Lady and the early Church to give it new life and enflame it with the fire of His love. Mary was present on that occasion precisely because she was the mother of the Church.
When Jesus hung on the cross and said to His mother, "Woman, behold thy son," He was not only making St. John, the beloved apostle, her son, but all of us to be her children and in doing that He was proclaiming His mother to be the mother of His Church. How fitting this is for women have a great sense of care. And Mary has a special care for all the children God has created. What a loving mother she is! She is the best of all mothers. Mary will teach us to love Jesus as she did. She is loving, tender, devoted and has only one wish, and that is, that all of us should be devoted to her Son and keep His commandments. It will break her heart is she should lose one of her children from entering heaven. The very reason why Our Blessed Lady keeps appearing time and again in different parts of the world is to warn us to be faithful to her Son and keep His commandments.
We must not forget that Mary is the mother of the Universe and so she wants all people, Christians and non-Christians, to proclaim her Son as their Lord and God.
So, today, if we want to show our love for Our Blessed Lady let us renew our love for her Son Jesus and assure Him that we want to please Him by keeping His commandments.
Lord Jesus, thank for giving Your mother to be ours and may we be true and devoted to You and so never hurt her loving heart. May we all earnestly look forward to being with You and our loving mother Mary in heaven.
