JESUS IS LORD, OUR GOD AND BROTHER

First Week of Ordinary Time

Heb. 2:5-12 & Mk. 1:21-28

Some forms of life are higher than others … God is higher than the angels and they are higher than humanity. But I once knew someone, an eccentric poet, who was convinced that cats were superior to us! It takes all sorts to make up our world!

The author to the Hebrews is aware that we humans are lower than angels. For a short time he sees Jesus, because he became a man, being made lower than them. But now He is greater than any angel, crowned with glory and splendour, precisely because by God’s grace He submitted to death to save humankind. Having obeyed His Father He rose from the dead and was proclaimed as Lord of the Universe.

In the Gospel we see the power God invested in His Son Jesus. He not only speaks with authority bit He also has power over unclean spirits. By His word He can cast them out of people.

How fortunate we are to have Jesus as our God and Brother whom the angels of Heaven worship with the words, “Holy, holy, holy.” How much more we should worship and love Him then they do because He became one of us. We must never allow ourselves to put more confidence in human experts that we do in the truths as revealed by Jesus. Others may be guided by personalities in newspapers and magazines more than they are in the principles of the Gospels, but surely not us, who describe ourselves as His followers. Others may choose a life of following the stock market than to live to hear His words, “Blessed are the poor in spirit, theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”

Lord Jesus we must be convinced in our hearts and in our actions that You are our Lord who is to be exalted far above any person or thing. To You do we give our love and adoration.
