JESUS WAY IS THE ONLY WAY

Twenty-fourth Week in Ordinary Time

1 Tim. 3:14-16 & Lk. 31-35

What could be described as a beautiful creed about Jesus is today's first reading. It is a wonderful profession of our belief about the life and nature of Our Lord. Both succinct and comprehensive it relays some of His essential qualities and deeds. It is worth memorizing. “He was made visible in the flesh, attested by the Spirit, seen by the angels, proclaimed to the pagan, believed in by the world, taken up in glory.” Yes, how true are the words of Saint Paul, “Without any doubt, the mystery of our religion is very deep indeed.”

The Gospel reading expresses the frustration of Jesus that there are some people you can never please! 'They criticised John the Baptist for fasting and they criticised Me for feasting' is His attitude. The answer to their problem is to be found in His conclusion, “Yet Wisdom has been proved right by all her children.” By these words Jesus is saying time will prove Him right and others wrong, if you give what He says a try. In effect He is saying 'My way is the only way. To know the full value and impact of following Me, you must be willing to try it day in and day out, over the long haul, through thick and thin, in excitement and boredom.'

Everything that is best and worthwhile in life requires patience and time to prove itself. We realise what great wisdom there is in the way of Jesus only by living it and sharing it over a long period. People who are faithful to Christ through all the ups and downs of daily life reap a deep reassurance.

Lord Jesus, help us to realise that You are God and You are always right, and in following You we can never go wrong.
