Twenty-fifth Week in Ordinary Time

Ezra 6:7-8 & 12, 14-20 & Lk. 8:19-21.

The Temple in Jerusalem was very important to every Jew. How it came to be built and the priests chosen are told to us by Ezra, along with the rituals and traditions they observed in accordance with the laws laid down by Moses.

This was the religious heritage into which Jesus was born. He learned from Mary and Joseph the traditions of the Jewish faith. He observed the rituals, kept the Jewish festivals and died with a Jewish prayer on His lips.

In today’s Gospel we read about the special trip that Jesus’ mother and His family made to be with Him while He was preaching. Told that His family was outside and wanted to see Him, Jesus seized this opportunity to teach about His real family: they are those who hear the word of God and act upon it. Most certainly Jesus was not denigrating His mother whose unique privilege it is to have given birth to Jesus, but even greater than that was the fact that Mary fully obeyed His Father's will.

Heavenly Father, help us to realise that the most important thing in our lives is to do Your will, and that when we do we are truly Your children and the brothers and sisters of Your Son Jesus.
